May 18  - On this day in geek history in 1953 Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier. Cochran flew a F-86 Sabrejet over northern part of California in an attempt to break the barrier and traveled at an average speed of 652.337 MPH during her flight.
Chuck Yeager, who in 1947 became the first person to break the sound barrier, flew on her right wing throughout her history making flight.
